BATTERIES

REPLACEMENT BATTERIES

The battery in a vehicle serves a few very important functions:

  • Provides current to start the engine
  • Powers ignition systems and vehicle electrics while engine isn’t running
  • Receives a charge from the alternator to maintain charge
  • Smooths out spikes and dips in voltage, caused by electrical accessories

If your vehicle electrical system isn’t in top condition, you may experience difficulties starting your vehicle, electrical gremlins and possibly damaged accessories. Many Tyrepower stores offer replacement battery and battery testing services.

So if batteries wear out, how long do they last? Batteries typically last at least 5 years, depending on a variety of factors such as:

  • Vehicle usage – Is your vehicle used for any short trips or longer drives?
  • Vehicle technology – Vehicles with stop-start technology are harder on batteries.
  • Aftermarket accessories – Extra load placed on the battery can cause shorter lifespans.
  • Local climate – Batteries used in cold climates won’t last as long.

Many of the Century Batteries stocked at your local Tyrepower will come with either a warranty between 24 and 40 months, depending on what series product you require. All Century batteries will have the warranty age on the label.

Battery health condition can be quickly and easily tested using a multimeter or a specialised load tester. Generally, your vehicle has some simple diagnostics and will check your battery and charging system health and will display a warning light on your dashboard, should any irregular voltages be detected.

It’s important to note that many symptoms of a failing battery can also be caused by other electrical components, such as your alternator, wiring or improper 3rd party accessory installations. Typically, Tyrepower recommends having your battery tested annually once it reaches 3 years of age, or before you go on a long drive or road trip to minimise any potential chance of being stuck with a vehicle that struggles to start.
